With the first-ever College Football Playoff rankings out, a precedent has now been set for what teams need to do to get necessary points to impress the 12-person playoff committee.
The first chance to impress the voters after the initial ranking is this weekend and it couldn’t have come at a better time for a few teams. No. 2 Florida State faces its toughest remaining opponent, while No. 7 Ole Miss and No. 4 Auburn are playing a must-win game in the daunting SEC West.
Here are the top games to watch this weekend (predicted winners in bold):
1) No. 7 Ole Miss vs. No. 4 Auburn (ESPN, 4 p.m.): The SEC West is by far the most talented division in the nation, with five bowl eligible teams still in contention for the division title. The picture is expected to get a little bit clearer after Bo Wallace and the Rebels face off against Nick Marshall and the Tigers.
2) No. 15 Arizona State vs. No. 18 Utah (Fox Sports One, 8 p.m.): The winner of this game will be one of two clear front-runners in the crowded Pac-12 South division. Travis Wilson is the last piece of the puzzle for Utah’s offense, while the Sun Devils are looking for Taylor Kelly to regain some footing and be the dual-threat force he was prior to his injury.
3) Louisville vs. No. 2 Florida State (ESPN, Thursday, 4 p.m.): This is the last remaining test for Florida State as they will face the Cardinal’s defense that gives up just 14.6 points per game. The Seminoles clearly have some flaws, but if Jameis Winston can muster up his late game magic, there’s no stopping them in this contest.
4) No. 20 West Virginia vs. No 10 TCU (ABC/ESPN 2, 12:30 p.m.): One week after scoring a school record of 82 points, TCU will travel to Morgantown, West Virginia and avoid becoming the second top-10 team to lose there. Clint Trickett is known to shine in big moments, but does he have enough in his arsenal to keep up with TCU’s high-octance offense?
5) No. 25 UCLA vs. No. 14 Arizona (ESPN, 7:30 p.m.): The Bruins could become the other front-runner in the Pac-12 South with a win over Arizona, but they’re going to need a big game from quarterback Brett Hundley against Arizona’s Scooby Wright and talented defense.
Every week, the Emerald will feature a different sports bar from the Eugene/Springfield area where students can watch the games. This week, it is Taylor’s Bar and Grill in Eugene.
Taylor’s is widely known to the University of Oregon population since it’s located right next to campus, but apart from the craziness that takes place there everyday, it’s a local legacy when it comes to bars.
Here are the top-five reasons to check out Taylor’s this week:
1) The food is very good, but above all else, Taylor’s serves the best chicken pot pie not made by your mother.
2) The atmosphere is what puts Taylor’s above all other bars because no matter what, there are always people to make friends and drink with.
3) How can you not like a place that serves $1 beers and has outdoor seating to accompany it for the rare nice days we have left?
4) There will always be entertainment at Taylor’s. Whether it be a physical exchange between people or a drunken song sang by half the bar, it’s sure to give you a story to tell for the next day.
5) It’s right across the street from campus, making it the most reliable and easily accessible bar around.
