The Super Bowl is one of the most watched and most highly anticipated events of the year. While it is a football game, the part everyone waits for – non-sports fans included – is the half time show. Even though this event is one of the shortest concerts of the year, it is the one that most people watch. The event, however, is more than just a simple concert. It is a spectacle.
Katy Perry was fortunate enough to be the performer for this year’s half time show, and she certainly proved she was the right woman for the job. From her very entrance, I knew this half time show would be one I wouldn’t forget. To open the show, Katy Perry rode a massive lion to the song “Roar.” The lion even jumped on its hind legs and let out a few roars. It was also the first lion to set foot on the Super Bowl stadium.
Following her grand entrance, Katy Perry switched outfits and transitioned to one of her other hits, “Dark Horse.” The next, “I Kissed a Girl,” included a guest appearance by Lenny Kravitz, who rocked his part of the song. Already Katy Perry was putting on a fabulous show, and it would only improve from there.
In moving to “Teenage Dream,” Katy Perry again switched outfits and the set transitioned to an animated beach. These beach things, which included sharks, beach balls, and coconut trees, danced along with Katy Perry. One of dancers, the left shark, provided a particular powerful performance and has even become an Internet sensation. Katy Perry also performed her hit “California Gurls,” accompanied by many new backup dancers in bikinis, on the beach set.
Missy Elliot then surprised the audience with a duet with Katy Perry. Again, Katy Perry performed an outfit swap, this time to a jersey. Missy Elliot performed three songs with Katy Perry, and the dances for these songs were easily the best choreography of the show. My only disappointment was that this part felt somewhat disjointed from the rest of the performance. While Missy Elliot certainly did a wonderful job, her songs did seem to fit in very well with Katy Perry’s music.
For the grand finale, Katy Perry did her last outfit switch, this time to a gown. She rode a shooting star around the stadium as fireworks exploded around her, and of course she did this to the song “Firework.” This finale was definitely a fitting ending for an explosive show. All in all, Katy Perry gave a very memorable performance which should be considered one of the best Super Bowl half time shows of all time.
