Chip Kelly named American Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year

Oregon football head coach Chip Kelly was recognized as the American Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year on Tuesday. It was his fifth national honor this year after leading Oregon to a 12-0 season and the BCS National Championship Game.

The Ducks lost to Auburn in that game, but it did nothing to dim Kelly’s accomplishments. Oregon led the FBS in points per game (47.0) and total offense (530.7 yards per game). Under Kelly’s leadership, the Ducks registered an undefeated season despite the relative inexperience of first-year starting quarterback Darron Thomas and the one-game suspension of running back LaMichael James.

This is the first time an Oregon coach has been honored with the AFCA Coach of the Year award. Since 1935, coaches at four-year colleges have cast their votes to decide the winner of the award.

In addition to the AFCA award, Kelly also earned the Associated Press, Eddie Robinson, Sporting News and Walter Camp coach of the year honors.

Kelly’s second full season as Oregon head coach came to an end Monday night, and he has already put together an impressive resume. The Ducks are 22-4 under his leadership, losing just one Pacific-10 Conference game in the process. Oregon traveled to the Rose Bowl last year after winning the Pac-10 outright, and eventually fell at the hands of Ohio State.

Back in September, Kelly signed a six-year, $20.5 million extension to remain Oregon’s head coach until at least 2015.
