Kicking off the season with women’s soccer

Florida Southern’s womens’ soccer team charged head-first into regular season play early September. Looking to improve on last season’s record of 4-8-3, fourth year head coach Brittany Jones and her squad took the road this past weekend to take on Barry University and Flagler College.

Their last match saw the Mocs against last year’s regional runner-up and defending Sunshine State Conference champions Barry University. This was the fourth time in four years that Florida Southern played a top-25 team in the opening weekend of the season.

Barry opened the game with a goal by forward Amanda Traynor from 15 yards out into the top left corner of the net. After conceding this goal, the Moccasin back line consisting of seniors Christine Knudstrup and Gianna Conte and sophomores Jess Goedde and Juliana Guida limited Barry to only one shot for the next 57 minutes of play.

The next goal came 65 minutes into play from the reigning Sunshine State Conference Player-of-the-Year Lavinia Nkomo, which secured Barry a 2-0 lead. Nkomo scored again in 89 minutes in, securing the game for Barry. Both Nkomo’s goals were assisted by forward Amanda Traynor.

“The 3-0 result doesn’t really show how well the girls played and that it was more along the lines of a 1-0 game,” head coach Brittany Jones said

Moccasin Helena Norrstrom, a sophomore goalkeeper, made six saves in her first career start.

The ladies returned to St. Augustine to play Flagler College on Sept 6th. After being delayed for several hours due to weather conditions, the game was cancelled. At press time, a makeup date had yet to be announced.

The Lady Mocs will be on the road Sept. 19 as they take on Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach.

Both the team and coaching staff have high hopes for this coming soccer season.
