Former Cougar letterman Chris Almendarez received a promotion to the position of President for the Round Rock Express, the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers baseball team.

Almendarez was previously the General Manager for the team, after joining the organization back in 2009.

While at UH in 1995, Almendarez played alongside current Cougars head baseball coach, Todd Whitting, appearing in 22 games during his season with the Cougars.

In a news release from the UH athletics department, Whitting expressed his delight in his former teammates success.

“I am extremely excited and proud of Chris and his family,” Whitting said. “He was a great teammate at Houston and continues to be a tremendous ambassador for UH and Cougar baseball.”

Almendarez is one of numerous former-Cougars working in ranks of Major League Baseball.

Other notable Cougars include Jeff Banister, manager of the Texas Rangers, MLB scouts Mike Basso and Greg Runser, as well as managers for a number of minor-league programs.

With this announcement, UH baseball is in the news again, as they recently announced an expansion project to add a baseball development facility and new clubhouse beyond the left field wall at Cougar Field.

The Cougars are currently preparing for the new season, which features 32 home games. They will debut this season with a home series against the Villanova University Wildcats in late February.
