Men’s basketball tops No.20 Baylor, Edward Cheserek continues to pile up awards

— On Monday, the Oregon men’s basketball team picked up what could be the signature win of their preseason and a sure resume booster come March with a 74-67 win over the No.20 Baylor Bears at Matthew Knight Arena. Meanwhile, the Oregon women’s basketball team picked up an impressive win of their own over a ranked opponent with a 79-77 upset-win over the No.22 North Carolina Tar Heels in their season opener.

— After an upset win over No.9 UCLA on Nov. 13, the Oregon volleyball team is fighting for a postseason birth. Ryan Kostecka has laid out what the Ducks will need to do to keep their tournament hopes alive as the regular season comes to a close.

— It was announced on Tuesday that Oregon distance running phenom Edward Cheserek was named the West Regional Athlete of the year for the 2015 NCAA Division I Cross Country season. The announcement came just four days after Cheserek captured the NCAA West Regional individual championship.

— USC receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster has been one of the top offensive threats in the PAC-12 this season and is a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award, presented annually to college football’s top receiver. As Oregon prepares to face the Trojans this week, Gary Kleinof the Los Angeles Times writes that Smith-Schuster “nearly joined” the Ducks out of high school.

— Oti Gildon and Maggie Crockett both attended Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, Washington, and are now continuing their high school relationship at Oregon as teammates for the Ducks.

— Oregon athletics had plenty to announce on the recruiting front last week, and several other Duck teams have now announced recruiting news within the past few days. As Oregon golf prepares for the beginning of their spring season, it was announced on Monday that Oregon coach Casey Martin has signed three players to Nation Letters of Intent. Oregon volleyball also added four recruits on monday, and the Duck’s distance program announced the addition of two of the top prep runners in the nation late last week.

— Halla Hinriksdottir was one of the U-19 goalkeepers in Iceland before coming to Oregon. Now, she is continuing her journey as a Duck and “appreciates being a student-athlete — not a student and an athlete like she was in Iceland.”
