The Student Centers hosted its annual My Safe Spring Break event Monday afternoon in the Student Center Plaza.

The event provided several different departments the opportunity to interact with students and teach them about some of the dangers students may face over the break.

“We want to help put students in positions where they can make better decisions, especially while they’re traveling,” marketing manager for the Student Centers Ashriel Dunham said.

Students participated in an ice cream eating contest, tried on fatal vision goggles for distracted driving demonstrations and received free condoms in a safe sex talk from Smart Cougars. UH Wellness provided free sunscreen to students and Cougars in Recovery provided students with substance abuse and alcohol awareness information.

Other tips mentioned at the event included how to protect your ATM transactions, knowing the liquor laws for wherever you travel, eating before drinking and locking up belongings. Additional safety tips are also listed on the Student Centers’ website.

“We want students to learn information that they might not have known before about how to be safe,” Dunham said.

Some students came for the ice cream, but others said they appreciated the tips for staying safe.

“There isn’t much information here that I didn’t already know, but it was still cool to hear it,” economics freshmen John Tan said. “Free food and free stuff is a plus.”

Kinesiology freshman Reena Cherian agreed with Tan, saying that she thinks the event was helpful and that students should utilize the free information they are offered.

“It’s different and informational,” Cherian said. “I think that’s important.”
