Charlotte women’s soccer opened their home season with a 1-0 win against UNC Greensboro (0-2) Monday night at Transamerica field. The 49ers (1-1) played in front of the stadium’s second largest crowd in the venue’s 22-year history. The 1,212 fans were there to witness head coach John Cullen claim his 200th career win.

“It’s important to get that win,” Cullen said. “When you start the season 0-1, you look for that win as quickly as you can get it. We knew the importance of the game tonight. We certainly didn’t want to slip to 0-2.”

Abby Stapleton, the 49ers freshman goalkeeper put up her first career shutout with four saves.

Charlotte pounded away at Greensboro’s defense in the first half putting up 14 shot attempts to Greensboro’s 0. Six different Niners players made shot attempts but only Martha Thomas shot attempt got through.

Thomas scored off a classic give and go from Virginia Lingo. In the eighth minute Martha fed Lingo and outran the defense racing towards the goal. Lingo floated the ball right above the defense for an one on one shot against the goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper for the only goal of the game.

Thomas scored her 35th career goal, en route to becoming the school’s all time high scorer in Charlotte women’s soccer. The goal also gave Thomas her 10th game-winning goal, becoming the third player in program history to reach double digits.

“We started to tire a little bit in the second half. I think the game we played Friday night at USF, in overtime, took a bit of a toll on us. We misplayed some passes and were a bit loose in possession. But, we gritted it out and it was a great reaction to losing a heartbreaker last Friday,” Thomas said.

Lingo added four shot attempts to Thomas’ six. Sophomore Megan Greene and Kyla Clark also contributed two attempts.

Charlotte takes on their SEC challenger Georgia in Charlotte. Georgia is ranked No. 15 and face off at 7 p.m. On Friday.
