On Friday, October 6, UO President Michael Schill will give a “State of the University” speech to students, faculty and others in the campus community. The speech will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will be held on campus in the ERB Memorial Ballroom. His speech was announced on Around the O and was accompanied by a message from Schill.

The message was also sent out via email to those with a UO email account. The message began by expressing the values that Schill deemed core to the success of the University of Oregon. One of those values was inclusiveness.

“We value every student and member of the faculty and staff, regardless of immigration status, race, religion, ethnic or national origin, political view, socio-economic status, gender identity or expression, or sexual orientation,” wrote Schill in the message.

He also referenced an email that was sent out campus-wide earlier this week affirming his and the school’s commitment to addressing sexual harassment and violence despite the recent federal changes to Title IX. The changes mentioned will enable colleges to raise the burden of proof required in campus sexual assault investigations

“We all have a responsibility to do or say something if we see a fellow Duck in trouble or at risk,” said Schill. “Recent federal changes to Title IX will have little, if any, impact on our policies and practices.”

In addition, he also listed free speech, free expression, respect for others and yourself, and the pursuit of excellence. He concluded by again reminding readers of the upcoming speech and welcoming the University community to the new school year.
