Cal women’s basketball suffers blowout in Corvallis

The Pac-12 woes continued for the Cal women’s basketball team on Friday night, as Cal fell to No. 8 Oregon State in a 81-44 blowout.

The Bears put up a valiant effort early on against a balanced Beaver squad, going bucket for bucket to start the game. Two big three-pointers by senior Jaelyn Brown kept the score tied at 17 after one quarter.

But that was as close as Cal would get. Oregon State — a team that dominates second quarters — did so again tonight, going on a 16-0 run over a seven-minute span to blow open the game.

After halftime, the onslaught continued. The Beavers pushed their lead to 23 points after three quarters and then to 37 by the final buzzer. In the end, shooting was the difference. The stifling Oregon State defense held Cal to just 25.8 percent shooting, and the Beavers found their offense and shot 54.2 percent from the field.

The Bears have now lost five straight games, and the schedule doesn’t get any easier with a matchup against No. 6 Oregon on Sunday.
