Maswanganyi, Tuilefano shine at NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships

Houston track and field sprinter Shaun Maswanganyi earned First Team All-American honors at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The junior competed in the men’s 60-meter dash, finishing in fourth place with a personal best of 6.56 seconds and earned an All-American selection.

Graduate Nu’uausala Tuilefano also made an impact, earning Second Team All-American honors in the women’s shot put while placing 13th in the meet.

Tuilefano’s throw of 16.10 meters gave her second consecutive All-American honor.

UH wrapped up the indoor season by sending five athletes to the 2023 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

To qualify for the national meet, the five athletes were ranked in the top 16 in each of their respective events.

In addition to Maswanganyi and Tuilefano were senior Kelly-Ann Beckford, junior Christyan Sampy and junior De’Vion Wilson.

Beckford, who was the AAC champion in the 800 meters, competed at the indoor nationals and placed 16th in the event. Sampy, the Cougars record holder pole vault, placed 11th overall in the pole vault. De’Vion Wilson came into the meet ranked 12th in the nation in the 60-meter hurdles and placed 14th in the event.
