Whether you’re a fan of classic horror slashers, family-friendly classics that inspire nostalgia or modern thrillers that make you jump out of your seat, there’s something for everyone in this movie list.

1. “Beetlejuice” (1988)

This classic film brings it all. Telling the story of a couple in the afterlife, a surprisingly lovable family and a mischievous spirit played by Michael Keaton, “Beetlejuice” is my first pick for an unmissable Halloween movie. With whimsical claymation and eccentric sets, “Beetlejuice” inspires nostalgia, laughter and heartwarming spookiness. It’s the perfect balance between family friendly and horrific, making for a great Halloween movie pick.

2. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993)

Any Halloween movie list is incomplete without at least one Tim Burton movie. In this unskippable claymation film, Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king of Halloweentown, decides that he has had enough of Halloween. He discovers Christmastown and decides to kidnap Santa and steal his job.

This classic was the pick of many students when asked, “What’s your favorite Halloween movie?” Here’s what they had to say.

Matthew Tutten, a third-year graduate student studying Philosophy, said, “It has the narrative structure of a Christmas movie, but the actual characters are more Halloween-oriented, which is why I like it. It’s classic.”

Lily Pinn, a sophomore studying Global Studies, said, “It brings back a lot of nostalgia. It’s a great movie to watch between fall and winter, right near the end of October.”

3. “The Shining” (1980)

If you’re looking for a truly bone-chilling horror classic to watch, “The Shining” is a great pick. When a problematic family contracts cabin fever in the snowy mountains of Colorado, things begin to go wrong. Stanley Kubrick’s eerie close-up shots and creative cinematography, paired with Jack Nicholson’s terrifying performance, make this film one to watch this Halloween season. Filmed at Mt. Hood’s Timberline Lodge, this film is a rite of passage watch for any Oregonian.

4. “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” (1966)

For those looking for a more nostalgic pick that inspires warmth and holiday spirit, you can’t go wrong with this movie. The movie follows Linus, Charlie Brown’s best friend, as he waits for all of Halloween night in the pumpkin patch to see the illusive “Great Pumpkin.” With classic moments like Charlie and his friends getting rocks instead of candy while trick-or-treating, and Snoopy’s air battle with the Red Baron atop his doghouse, this film is a great one to inspire Halloween spirit.

5. “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984)

If you’re a fan of ‘80s slashers and not sleeping at night, “A Nightmare on Elm Street” is a great pick for your Halloween movie night. It tells the story of a girl named Nancy who gets haunted in her dreams by Freddy Krueger, a disfigured man with knives for fingers. This movie is a classic thriller, with unforgettable chase scenes and suspense sure to keep your heart racing.

Zachary Davidson, a senior majoring in Global Studies, recommended this pick. “If I’m watching a Halloween movie, I want it to be scary. I like movies with a lot of suspense and payoff,” he said. “Older horror movies are better than newer ones.”

6. “Corpse Bride” (2005)

Tim Burton brings sweet supernatural storylines to the screen in “Corpse Bride.” The movie tells the story of a man named Victor who accidentally marries a dead woman named Emily. He enters the afterlife, and has to figure out how to get back to the real world before his betrothed, Victoria, marries someone else. This claymation film has charming musical numbers, endearing characters and a spooky spirit throughout. Burton’s iconic style and charm are evident throughout, making it a fun movie pick for Halloween.

7. “As Above So Below” (2014)

If you’re looking for a movie to make you jump out of your seat with frustration towards the characters on screen, watch “As Above So Below.” The film follows an archaeologist as she descends into the Catacombs of Paris to search for an ancient artifact. With horrifying jumpscares and sequences that will make you want to hide under a blanket, this movie is a fantastic thriller pick for the Halloween season. Delivering intense twists and questionable character decisions, adrenaline junkies won’t want to miss this one.
