If all goes well for the Illinois men’s and women’s tennis programs in 2013, the teams will not have to travel very far for national competitions.
The NCAA announced Friday that the 2013 NCAA Tennis Championships were chosen to be held at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex and Atkins Tennis Center from May 16-27.
“We’re very proud to have been chosen to host the 2013 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships,” Athletic Director Ron Guenther said in a press release. “The Khan Outdoor Complex and the Atkins Tennis Center give us one of the best tennis facilities in the nation, and hosting the championships provides us an opportunity to showcase our facility and engage our community.”
Over the past 15 seasons, the men’s squad has made it to the championships 15 times, including 10 trips to the round of 16.
In 2003, the Illini were named national champions. The women’s team has enjoyed similar success, as it has made it to the championships 10 times since 1996.
“The players and coaches, along with the fans, should be very excited to host the championships here in Champaign-Urbana,” women’s head coach Michelle Dasso said in a press release. “We have a great tennis community and I know the support will be wonderful.”
The NCAA also announced that Assembly Hall would host the 2013 NCAA Regional for volleyball Dec. 13-14. The Illini are required to play at least one game during that season at Assembly Hall prior to the Regional game. It is the first time since 1992 that Illinois will host the Regional Final.
In 2012, Assembly Hall will also play host to the women’s Regional Gymnastics Championships that will take place April 7. The last time Assembly Hall hosted a gymnastics meet was 2004 for the men’s NCAA Championships.
