Former Hawkeye football player’s trial may be delayed, again

By Ryan Roccaforte

A request has been made that a status conference for former Hawkeye football player Cedric Everson be scheduled by the court two to three weeks from July 5 and trial be continued, according to court records.

The request was a result of personal health concerns of Everson’s defense counsel, Leon F. Spies.

The details of Spies’ health have been disclosed to Assistant Johnson County Attorney Anne Lahey and Chief Judge Patrick Grady, according to court records.

At the status meeting, Spies plans to reschedule a pretrial conference and set a new trial date.

Spies believes he will be unable to effectively represent Everson at the current trial date, July 12.

Everson, 21, is accused of second-degree sexual assault of a female UI student-athlete in October 2007. He was not required to attend today’s conference.
